Obligatory Thanksgiving post

Thanksgiving is tomorrow so make sure to be thankful for all the things you like. The UD Alumni Relations Blog is thankful for Grotto’s cheese fries, Kate’s nachos, Deer Park bugers and pepto bismol. We’re thankful for all sorts of other things, many of which aren’t appropriate for a family blog like this one, but most of all, we’re thankful for the internet.

Without the internet we’d be crippled (both socially and physically) and, frankly, we are in awe of those who worked before the days of the world wide web.

How did people waste time at work before the internet?  Surely solitaire and minesweeper couldn’t occupy that many hours.  And what about the days before computers?  Did you play tic-tac-toe vs. yourself all day long?  Questions to be answered another day.

Happy Thanksgiving, loyal readers.  Enjoy the vacation.

Time magazine recently published its ‘The Time 100 – The World’s Most Influential People’ and while the UD Alumni Relations Blog was shockingly omitted from the list, one Blue Hen managed to get involved.

Art professsor David Brinley painted the portrait of one of those most influential people, giver away of prizes and modern saint Oprah Winfrey.

Brinley has previously done work for Time as well as Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated and The New York Times Magazine.  According to the UD AR Blog’s big brother publication UDaily, Brinly quickly sketched Winfrey by studying her on tv and then using his wife as a model.

“I ran with the sketch, did it quickly, using my wife as a model for lighting and position, sent it in and had it approved with no changes,” Brinley said.

The UD Alumni Relations Blog salutes Professor Brinley for his work, but wishes he would’ve stood up to big media and told the fatcats at Time that he would only paint Oprah the Great if his favorite blog was included on their obviously snooty list.
